A “Neger” was a proof of evolution in the 1874 edition of Ernst Haeckel's Anthropogenie or The Evolution of Man.

Darwin did not extrapolate to human beings until Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871). By 1871, ambitious Haeckel had firmly stepped in the print, and the old Darwin paid homage even in introduction:

"The conclusion that man is the co-descendant with other species… is not in any degree new… maintained by several eminent naturalists    and philosophers… especially by Häckel… besides his great work 'Generelle Morphologie' (1866), has recently (1868, with a second edit. in 1870), published his 'Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte,' in which he fully discusses the genealogy of man. If this work had appeared before my essay had been written, I should probably never have completed it. Almost all the conclusions at which I have arrived I find confirmed by this naturalist, whose knowledge on many points is much fuller than mine." 

Darwin also gave thanks to Vogt, Büchner, Rolle, Lyell (The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man), Wallace and Huxley (Evidences as to Man's place in Nature) in the Descent.

Charles Darwin was struck by the Haeckelian energy and ended in a praise (1871, p. 203):

"In attempting to trace the genealogy of the Mammalia, and therefore of man, lower down in the series, we become involved in greater and greater obscurity. He who wishes to see what ingenuity and knowledge can effect, may consult Prof. Haeckel's works."

Regarding Haeckel's faked embryosa recycled throughout the 20th century comprehensive school textbooks, Darwin praised even in the Subsequent editions of the Origin:

“[Haeckel]…brought his great knowledge and abilities to bear on what he calls phylogeny, or the lines of descent of all organic beings. In drawing up the several series he trusts chiefly to embryological characters.”
