ISRAEL & 729
Who has heard that in the 1930's Bagdad every 3rd citizen was
a native Jew? The Sefardi (Safrati) Jews have a 400 year old history and the
Mizrahi Jews over 2,500 year old history in the Middle East - both inside and
outside the location of the state of Israel (Palestine).

There were Jews living in peace and harmony
across the entire Middle East from Turkey to Pakistan and they have far more in
common than not. Regarding Iran, Cyrus the Great freed the jews from Babylonian
captivity and invited them to live in Iran which is where the Jewish population
in Iran comes from and dates back to. The British in the wane of their empire
drew lines on the map and divided the former Ottoman, former Abbasid Empire into
many smaller nations which would rival eachother rather than offer a united
economic and militarily competitive power against the West. The poverty of the
third world has been contributed if not created and maintained by the
post-colonialism of the West. The biggest tragedy, however, is the tied Woman of
the Muslim countries. No country can succeed if the wifes are not trusted:

The Jews are a poor scape goat for the problems.
Eulogy for Eretz Israel
Despite
the anti-Israel media war in Europe, the long-time funding office of the PLO,
Palestinian life expectancy increased from 48 to 72 years in 1967-1995. The
death rate decreased by over 2/3 in 1970-1990 and the Israeli medical campaigns
decreased the child death rate from a level of 60 per 1000 in 1968 to 15 per 1000
in 2000 for the "occupied" Palestinians at the West Bank. (An analogous figure
was 64 in Iraq, 40 in Egypt, 23 in Jordan, and 22 in Syria in 2000). During
1967-1988 the amount of comprehensive school and second level polytechnic
institutes for the Arabs was increased by 35%. During 1970-1986 the proportion
of Palestinian women at the West Bank and Gaza not having gone to school
decreased from 67 % to 32 %. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in
West Bank and Gaza increased in 1968-1991 from 165 US dollars to 1715 dollars
(compare with 1630$ in Turkey, 1440$ in Tunis, 1050$ in Jordan, 800$ in Syria,
600$ in Egypt. and 400$ in Yemen). Israel has been forced to damage the very
infrastructure she has constructed and administrated while hunting the weapons
from the milittant "freedom fighters". Between 1967-1993 roads, system of
siewers (gutters, ditches), electricity supply, water supply, schools, health
care system, and social welfare system to the West Bank and Gaza.
Chaim Weizmann and Emir Feisal were companions and emphasized the racial
relations and community between the Jews and the Arabs, in contrast to the
European elitist thinking even officially in the Versailles treaty. What the
English and French (and American, later on) colonialists were most afraid of,
was the business collaboration between the Jews and the Arabs. When 'bestowing'
independence, the old landlords did everything to knock down the close and
friendly associations between those "cousins". Wahhabites to lead Arabia. Yasser
Arafat's uncle to serve as the great mufti of Jerusalem, the most pathological
hater of the Jews the could found. In 1948, there were altogether 23 countries
that declared Jihad against Israel. Also there, England tried to ruin the
business collaboration between the Jews and the Arabs: In its mandate, England
prevented the Jews from preparing to the approaching war by forbidding the Jews
to carry a gun, by the capital punishment. Only Jews were not allowed to gather
arsenal. That is the main reason why so many Muslim countries declared the
"holy" war: It was supposed to be an easy victory.
Tel
Aviv (literally: Dumb-Hill of Spring) was plain desert at the beginning of the
20th century. Today, in the advent of its 100th year celebrations in 2009, it is
the Silicon Wadi (Valley) of not only Mediterranean but of the whole globe since
1990's. The world has never seen such a rocket area of original Hi Tech
innovations, I would say.
It is United States that profits from Israel, rather than the opposite. Israel
has received substantial direct economic aid from the United
States, including approximately $1.2 billion per year since the mid-1970's,
although that regular annual amount has been being tapered off by $120 million
per year beginning in 1998. In 2007, direct economic aid from the US amounted to
$120 million, or about 0.07% of Israel's GDP. As a payback,
Israel is not let to stop brain drain from Eretz israel to the US. Astonishing number
of 25% of the Israeli researchers have moved from Israel to the United States -
and this figure does not yet even include the people with double citizenship!
The next largest brain drain of researchers to US are 12.2% from Canada, 4.3%
from Netherlands, and 4.2% from Italy.
Before the Second Intifada, there were nearly 200 Israeli companies listed in the US
High Tech Nasdaq, after the II Intifada the count had dropped to about 100. (At
the moment the number is higher, again, and it should be born in mind that the
number did not drop below that from
all the European countries combined. Besides, also the IT bubble was popped
broken at the time globally, and at the early start of the Intifada II in
2000/2001 there was not yet a steep decrease.) Wikipedia lists 72 companies in Nasdaq in
2006:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Israeli_companies_quoted_on_the_Nasdaq.
A list
of about 150 companies was updated in 2007, of which 19 are over the
counter, from end of 2007 (not only on NASDAQ but on the more strict New York
Stock Exchange):
http://israelnewsletter.com/israeli-stocks-trading-in-the-us/.
Dollars are green since the Americans pull them down
from the tree raw and fresh. E.g. Mirabilis by AOL with $0.4 billion, Indigo and
Mercury by HP with 0.7$ and 1.5 billion, respectively, M-systems by ScanDisk Corp (SNDK)
with $1.5 billion were big investments, Berkshire Hathaway’s first investment
out of the US of ISCAR Metalworking for 4$ billion, though. Israel has not been
able to let any of its companies to be scaled up in their homeland but most are
imported straight from the garage. The scaling up of industrial production would
mean jobs to both Jews, Arabs and other ethnic groups. Israel is ordered to stay
as some kind of innovation laboratory only, as the 51. state.
Over
half of the export from Israel are High tech products (32 $ billion in 2007),
compared to the 25% which is the average in the OECD countries. Israel's GDP is
about $200 billion, nearly six times its original, relative per-capita level.
Skyscrapers crowd Tel Aviv, multilane thruways, tunnels, fast trains and
spaghetti junctions crisscross the country, and some 80 shopping malls, the
first of which only opened in 1986. She harbours more museums per capita than any
other country. She exhibits second highest output of new book per citizen. More
patents per person than any other nation. More than 85% of solid waste in the
country is treated in an environmentally sound manner. The shekel is one of the
strongest currencies in the world, inflation is 2.5%, year 2007 growth of
5% was the developed world's highest for the fifth consecutive year, while unemployment
slid to a 15-year low of 6.5%. In 2007, Israel had the 44th-highest gross
domestic product and 22nd-highest gross domestic product per capita (at
purchasing power parity) at US$233 billion and US$33,3, respectively. The
country’s GDP by sectors is similar to that of developed countries with a
leading services sector at around 67%, the industrial sector follows with 31%
and agriculture is responsible for the remaining 3%. Israel’s major industrial
sectors include a leading high tech industry, electronic and bio medical
equipment, chemicals, metal products. The country is a member of the World Trade
Organization and a trial member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation
and Development (OECD).
In short, even the
immigrant PhD's
have to be humble enough to make their living by cleaning toilets before they
get the hold of making living. Although the export of the agriculture has
remained constant past the last 30 years, its relative amount has dropped from
70% to 3%. Out of the 3000 companies in Israel 80% are less than ten years old,
and the average failure rate of these start ups is very low, less than 50%. More
Israeli patents are registered in the US than from Russia, India, and China
combined, despite the enormous population disadvantage (about 7 million in
Israel vs. 2.5 billion combined in the other 3). One of
the secrets of innovative success in Israel is the fact that cheating is
minimized in the public funding: Money is not delivered according to research
plans but steady income ("kassavirta") and thus the market analysis is
emphasized. The support is designed so that the first 2-10 years a start-up
company does not have to pay taxes. But very little, if any, direct funding
without compensation is offered. Today, Israel draws Venture Capital (VC) more
than the Europe. A novel phenomenon is the strategy by which Israel has been
able to claim victory over China and other Far-East countries regarding the
modern High Tech factories: As an example, the supranational Intel transferred
the mass production of Centricon-processors to Israel, where ~20% of citizens
possess university decrees (ranking 3rd in the world) but where the environment respects patents and
are not plagiating every item they produce to others like the rocketting China. (China is a great country
of thieves since the first dynasty and homogenizing extinguishment of the
monotheistic Shang Ti faith and plural languages alike 2000 years ago. The
Empire of Pirates steals every moving article in your machine. Not s single
Finnish company has ever won a law suite in China, despite even evident
violation of valid IPR, Intellectual Property Rights.)
Intel was also offered
an overall tax rate of 10%, which is about three times lower than that of US.
Also, the biggest generic drug factory in the world was recently established in
Israel. Generating US$7 billion in annual revenues, Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical
Industries Ltd. (TEVA) is the world's largest generic pharmaceutical company.
TEVA makes generic versions of brand-name antibiotics, heart drugs, heartburn
medications, and more - in all close to 200 global generic products, 700
compounds, and more than 2800 dosage forms and formulations. TEVA's
pharmaceuticals are used in some 20% of U.S. generic drug prescriptions.
Examples of TEVA's generics include lower-cost equivalents of such blockbusters
as anti-depressant Prozac and cholesterol drug Mevacor. TEVA also acquired Barr
pharmaceuticals, putatively the world's largest biotech firm:
http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/commentary/observations.aspx?ID=86110. Nevertheless, in
biotechnology and original
drug development, about 400 experimental drugs have been approved or accepted in
clinical phases. Other major companies include cutting tools leader
ISCAR, software and information security leader
Checkpoint, and defense industry’s
IAI. The greatest portion of funding of
research per capita is found in Israel. Israel also has the greatest ratio of
researchers per square meter or population in the face of the world, far
exceeding I.e. Japan which was also raised by plagiation and copying of other
peoples ideas after the WWII. A modern Western plague is the way nobody talks to
each other. But the Israeli start-ups, in an ideal gas, are the opposite. They
are urged to communicate together within the start-ups, leading to joint
discoveries and inventions and shared IPR.
Nobel prizes, by definition, are
awarded to the people who have made the greatest services to the world. Although Sabin and Salk never
got it with their free Polio vaccines, 21% of the Nobels have gone to this
population of less that 17 million, taking both Eretz Israel and galut (diaspora)
into account:

Examples of modern
Israeli inventions include: Microsoft Windows NT operating system; Intel Pentium
MMX Chips; Gut cam ingestible pill video camera to diagnose digestive tract
diseases; Heart attack Blood Test Diagnoses by phone; The first PC antivirus
software in the world was developed in 1979 Israel; AOL Instant Messenger
Software; Blue-Light non-UV skin damage-free acne treatment (Clearlight device
that causes acne bacteria to self destruct without damaging the surrounding
skin); Firewall internet security software (Checkpoint company); MacAfee
crypting technology; first fully computerized radiation free diagnostic scanning
device for breast cancer; Baby Sense prevents Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
(SIDS); Seamless lingerie (Tafron provides for Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Banana
Republic & Nike); More scientific papers per capita than any other nation (109
per 10,000 people); Tecnomatix inventions utilized in GM, Ford, Boeing and
Lockheed Martin); Computerized system for ensuring proper administration of
medications to reduce risk of human error (which kills 7000 patients in U.S.
hospitals annually); Drip irrigation technology for farmers to conserve water;
Highest number of solar-power water heaters per capita according to the Guinness
Book of World Records; An Israeli company developed and installed one of the
largest solar power plants in the world (Mojave desert in California); First
cell phone at Motorola R&D lab; Non-exploitation labelling of diamonds (Daimond
Exchange); Transchip and the first camera that fits on a single electronic chip;
Eight county to launch satellites into space; Voice mail technology and SMS
(Amdocs, Comverse, Nice Systems); VOIP technology etc.Israel was the destination
for the first R&D centers outside the USA for Intel and Microsoft and also hosts
R&D centers for Google and in the future for Yahoo! (Intel is located at Kiriat
Gat near Beer Sheva. It is an odd combination of megaindustry and small town in
the middle of nowhere. Microsoft etc. is located at Haifassa. The high-tech and
bio-tech start ups often are located at Kiriat Weizman, which belongs to the
city of Rehovotin which in practice means Tel Aviv since the distance is only 15
km. Most of the Tel Aviv sky crapers are found in Ramat Gan, which is on the
opposite face to the Ayalon freeway.)
How has
the world reacted to such an impact? Despite of it, one-fourth of the judgements
of the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations strike Israel, compared to
zero judgments to all the Islamic countries combined. Out of the incidences
dealt in the Security Counsil one-third is having to do with Israel. I think
this resembles the hysteria seen in the Black Plague in Europe, when the
European Jews were accused of the pandemia and burnt alive. (As an example, one
the biggest Jewish populations in the continent was in Basel, Switzerland, and
all the 4000 souls were burnt in a Rhein island.)
As a
matter of fact, the population of Arabs (my beloved friends and brothers) under
the Israeli government was increased ten-fold (10X) in only 57 years. This is
close to the world record for any tribe, nation, tongue or culture on the whole
planet at the same time interval. The Sefardi Jews were expelled from Spain in
the very date when Christoffer Colombo lifted up his anchors and sailed away
from Spain. The Jews had to leave and their possessions were stolen. In the case
of the Mizrahi, the Jews have lived for millennia all around the Middle East
since the first exile of Israel 500 B.C., in what are now Muslim-dominated
countries. While much has been made of the 700,000 Palestinians having been made
homeless with the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, it's peculiar that
there is no official recognition of their Jewish counterparts. A greater number
of Jews - some 856,000 - were forcefully expelled from Arab countries after the
creation of the State of Israel, their homes forfeited, their belongings seized.
They became refugees, migrating to Israel, mainly. But they did not spoke any
Hebrew but Arabic and Farsi (Persian).
Israel has been forced to damage the very infrastructure she has constructed and
administrated while hunting the weapons from the milittant police forces
after the release of prisoners and arsenal according to the Oslo accords.
Between 1967-1993 roads, system of siewers (gutters, ditches), electricity
supply, water supply, schools, health care system, and social welfare system to
the West Bank and Gaza. Even for the Arab citizens of Israel, ideal was that
everyody gets the same salar for the same job, with the same social benefits.
This is stated in the law, officially. In contrast, even the official law in
Jordan which has the peace treaty with Israel, it is forbidden for a Jew to live
in the country. The health care services have been free for the Arab population,
only a portion of the price of the drugs must have been paid by the patients.
Under the administrations of Great Britain (1920-1947) or Jordan (1948-1967), no
universities were established for the Arabs in the country. According to The
Association of Arab Universities (http://www.aaru.edu.jo/),
in contrast, under the Israeli administration altogether six universities
appeared during the time (of course by the force of the local Arab people,
though). Also, since 1969 an independent newspaper has appeared in Jerusalem,
which has never been put under a censorship. The
Second Intifada could be called The Oslo War.
PLO was founded by the Arab League, not
the Palestinians. Palestinians, whom I love, were and are USED. Used as a
'vanguard'. You can read it from the PLO articles directly:
http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/mideast/plocov.htm
"Article 14: The destiny of the Arab nation, and indeed Arab existence
itself, depend upon the destiny of the Palestine cause. From this
interdependence springs the Arab nation's pursuit of, and striving for, the
liberation of Palestine. The people of Palestine play the role of the vanguard
in the realization of this sacred (qawmi) goal.
Article 7: It is a national duty to bring up individual Palestinians in an Arab
revolutionary manner. All means of information and education must be adopted in
order to acquaint the Palestinian with his country in the most profound manner,
both spiritual and material, that is possible. He must be prepared for the armed
struggle and ready to sacrifice his wealth and his life...
Article 10: Commando action ('FEDAYEEN' ) constitutes the nucleus of the
Palestinian popular liberation war. This requires its escalation,
comprehensiveness, and the mobilization of all the Palestinian popular and
educational efforts and their organization and involvement in the armed
Palestinian revolution... On this basis the Palestinian masses, regardless of
whether they are residing in the national homeland or in diaspora (mahajir)
constitute - both their organizations and the individuals - one national front
working for the retrieval of Palestine and its liberation through armed
struggle...Armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine. This it is the
overall strategy, not merely a tactical phase."
Aviv
is Hebrew for "spring", symbolizing renewal, and
tel is an archaeological site that
reveals layers of civilization built one over the other. The Jewish population
has been such a layer of native culture not only in the Palestine, yet the
expulsion of the native Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews from Pakistan to Morocco since
1948 is totally ignored in the European media:
http://www.helsinki.fi/~pjojala/Expelled-Jews-statistics.htm.
Don't You think for a blitch second that the industrial countries have desired
peace in the Middle East. A collaboration between the Jews with their technology
and science and Arabs with their oil, loyality and commitment has been the
greatest nightmare of the Europe at least. The intimate friendship between the
cousin nations, as officially declared by Chaim Weizmann and Emir Feisal in
Versailles peace conference was deliberately mutilated. Expulsion of the native
and national Jews from Muslim countries since 1948 has been
al Nakba to nations from Pakistan
to Morocco.

PS. If you are only after Jihad against Eretz Israel by the means of media war
after the conventional weapons were not succesful, please do not bother. I don't
want to have anything to do with any holy war - wars are not holy. No matter if
they are won or lost.

I question the role of the
Europe and USA as a peace mediator in the Middle East. I think the imbalance of
the area has been esteemed as a benefit for the Euramerica. Chaim Weizmann and
Emir Feisal were companions and emphasized the racial relations and community
between the Jews and the Arabs, in contrast to the European elitist thinking
even officially in the Versailles treaty. WHAT THE EUROPEAN (and US, later on)
COLONIALISM HATED MOST, was the business collaboration between the Jews and the
Arabs. When 'bestowing' independence to various Muslim countries, the old
landlords did EVERYTHING to knock down the close and friendly associations
between those "cousins". Jews with their technology and Arabs with their oil
would have constituted a rivalling power to Euramerica at the end of colonialism.
Wahhabites to lead Arabia. Yasser Arafat's uncle to serve as the great mufti of
Jerusalem, the most pathological hater of the Jews the could found.
PLO was founded by the Arab League, not the Palestinians. Palestinians, whom I
love, were and are USED. Used as a 'vanguard'. That can read it from the PLO
articles directly:
http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/mideast/plocov.htm
"Article 14:
The destiny of the Arab nation, and indeed Arab existence itself, depend upon
the destiny of the Palestine cause. From this interdependence springs the Arab
nation's pursuit of, and striving for, the liberation of Palestine. The people
of Palestine play the role of the vanguard in the realization of this sacred (qawmi)
goal.
Article 7:
It is a national duty to bring up individual Palestinians in an Arab
revolutionary manner. All means of information and education must be adopted in
order to acquaint the Palestinian with his country in the most profound manner,
both spiritual and material, that is possible. He must be prepared for the armed
struggle and ready to sacrifice his wealth and his life...
Article 10:
Commando action ('FEDAYEEN') constitutes the nucleus of the Palestinian
popular liberation war. This requires its escalation, comprehensiveness, and the
mobilization of all the Palestinian popular and educational efforts and their
organization and involvement in the armed Palestinian revolution.
...On this basis the Palestinian masses, regardless of whether they are
residing in the national homeland or in diaspora (mahajir) constitute - both
their organizations and the individuals - one national front working for the
retrieval of Palestine and its liberation through armed struggle... Armed
struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine. This it is the overall strategy,
not merely a tactical phase."
Palestinians were sacrifized. I do not accept this loss of human dignity.
FACTS about the
Finnish Jews and Finland
Finland has been the least
corrupt country in the world in the transparency international throughout the
3rd millennium:
http://www.transparency.org/policy_research/surveys_indices/cpi/2006 . In
the
OECD's international assessment of student
performance,
PISA, Finland has consistently been among the
highest scorers worldwide; in 2003, Finnish 15-year-olds came first in reading
literacy,
science, and
mathematics; and second in
problem solving, worldwide. The
World Economic Forum ranks Finland's tertiary
education #1 in the world. In 1906, Finland became the first European nation
(and one of the first in the world) to grant women the right to vote and run for
parliament. Finland's most famous company is Nokia, the world's largest producer
of mobile phones. Just 30 years ago, Nokia company was selling mainly tiers,
rubber boots and rubber sticks for the police. The most famous Finnish person
alive today is Linus Torvalds, who originated (and still maintains)
Linux, the shareware free computer operating
system which is taking the world by storm and is showing increasing signs of
revolutionizing the computer industry.
In 1905, the
second conference on Zionism was arranger in Helsinki, The Republic of
Finland (Suomi in the Finnish), which was free of the organized Russian
pogroms. Although our association was Christian already by then, there was much
collaboration with the small Jewish population since the Messianic Jews starring
Naphtali Rudnitzky founded the whole association. Rudnitzky was, actually, a
pioneering prophet even globally, in my opinion. I have studied the history of
eugenics (Rassenhygiene) in general, and I think Rudnitzky was one of the first
activist corner-speakers who really understood what the National Socialists were
up to. He even moved to Germany and preached there and warned that the nazi
movement was Satanic and dangerous.
Finland is one of the world's most progressive
nations, despite of less than optimal circumstances, including a harsh climate,
little variety of natural resources, a very small population and a long history
of being oppressed by its more powerful neighbors (The Swedish 'Vikings' and the
Russian/Soviet Union). Finland's climate is characterized by cold, and sometimes
severe, winters and relatively warm summers. Adding to the gloominess of the
long winters is the fact that in the far north (Lapland) the sun does not rise
for almost two months, and even in the south the days are short and the sun is
very low on the horizon even at noon. In summer the longest day lasts more than
two months in the far north, and even in the far south the nights never become
completely dark, with the days being separated by a just a few hours of twilight.
The most resistant population in the face of the Earth to HIV is the Finnish.
This is weird since the biggest difference in the exposure to the HIV as such is
between Finnish and Russian border so the resistance has not been developed
within the past 30 years. It seems this is due to extraordinary severe assaults
of influenza viruses, which has breeded over third part of the population to
sustain a truncated form of CCR5 receptor, the coreceptor to both HIV and
influenza. The country suffered from severe famines, e.g. in 1696-1697 one of
them killed a third of the population, together with influenza epidemic. Thus
breeding a resistant nation.
On December 6, 1917, just weeks after the November Bolshevik Revolution in
Russia, Finland declared its independence. (The other Baltic nations of Latvia,
Lithuania, Estonia and Poland did likewise, but only Finland was able to avoid
being reconquered.) The following year the country experienced a brief (three
and a half months) but bloody civil war. The bitter memories of this conflict
continued to affect politics and the national psyche for many years, and healing
only began during the Winter War of 1939-40, when both sides had to unite
against a common enemy. The Winter War was the result of an attack by the Soviet
Union. The Soviet forces were overwhelming in numbers but suffered massive
casualties at the hands of the unexpectedly fierce Finnish resistance. Nearly
one third of the Finnish army did not got a gun at the stat of the war and had
to get them in sieges from the enemy troops. Nevertheless, Finland eventually
had to give in and cede most of its Karelia region (a large chunk of the eastern
part of the country) to the USSR, causing about 400,000 people to lose their
homes and land. During this winter war with -40C temp no other country helped
Finland and Nazi Germany had signed Finland secretly to Soviet Unions realm in
the Rippentrop-Molotov treaty in Moscow. In the Soviet record of history, the
destroyed RUssian divisions just never existed and the whole war was only called
a border fight in the Leningrad military area. Subsequently, in 1941 Finland
joined the forces against the Soviet Union on the side of Germany with the goal
of regaining this lost territory, after Soviet Union had started bombing again
to the capital as well as other cities. Stalin thought the Finnish planes had
attacked although it was a question of German aircrafts. Finland did not go far
beyond its old borders and did not want to close the 900-day-siege of Leningrad
in order to avoid killing its civilian inhabitants. The mighty command to the
German troops was, after all, to destroy the whole city and its inhabitants in
the name of evolutionary struggle or Kampf for life which Finland did not share
with its democracy. Finally, Finland wound up having to cede even more territory
and pay heavy reparations.
Actually,
Finland was the only country of all the participants of the WWII that paid all
the war debts laid over it, which lasted ten years and was even few tiths of the
gross income. Just the ships Finland had to mostly import and then donate to the
USSR would have made a quey of 20 km or the trains full of machines and the like
numbered141490 wagons. Finland was also the only country of the lost side that
was never occupied, either by the German or Soviet troops. She was also the only
democracy waging a war aside the Nazi Germany - and had to pay for it dearly. At
the end of the war, Finland had to wage war also against the few German troops
in the Northern Finland and Norway. Finland was the ONLY country of the WWII
where the local Jews were in principle serving in arms with the German troops.
Three Finnish Jews were even offered the Iron Cross. They all refused, however,
and referred to their Mosaic faith. But one of them rescued a major German unit
from a siege. There was even a synagogue in the uttermost front battle field. In
1905, the second major Zionist conference was arranged in Finland, Helsinki. In
the Russian pogroms between 1820 and 1900 even one million Jews were killed but
those did not reach Finnish autonomy.
Following World War II, Finland assumed a policy of cautious neutrality. It was
not a part of the Eastern block. The term Finlandization entered the
international vocabulary and referred to the strong self-censorship,
self-control and pro-Soviet attitudes that characterized Finland at that time.
Politicians, civil servants and journalists were well aware of the consequences
(including to their careers) of publicly discussing injustices such as the
attacks leading to the Winter War or news about current Soviet atrocities. There
was much concern in the U.S. and elsewhere that a communist takeover would occur
in Finland and that Finlandization would eventually overtake other
nations in Western European as well.
Today Finland has a industrialized, largely free-market economy with a per
capita output and a standard of living (not only in terms of economic indicators
but also in terms of public health, public safety, welfare, culture and other
intangibles) rivaling those of France, Germany and Italy. This has been
accomplished simultaneously with maintaining what is consistently ranked as one
of the world's highest standards of environmental protection and sustainability.
Finland's economic performance has been attributed to its education system, its
infrastructure and a national consensus on problem solving. But it is also
likely due to the fact that the country is a strong and vibrant democracy. In
fact, according to some rankings it is at, or near, the top of all countries
with regard to democracy, press freedom and a lack of corruption.
The total population is only about 5.2 million. A density of 15 persons per
square kilometer (40 per square mile) makes it one of the most sparsely
inhabited countries in Europe. The capital and largest city is Helsinki, a port
city which was founded in 1550. ("Hell sin", named and cursed as such by the
Western invaders of the time.) The Finnish language is not related to most other
European languages (i.e., the Indo-European languages), and it may be of
Asiatic origin. Recent genetic studies have shown that, in contrast to the
language, most of the population of Finland is closely related to the Baltic and
Germanic peoples. The Samis, Finnish Indians are an indigenous minority who live
mainly in the far north, are linguistically related to the other Finns but are
genetically very far from them and Scandinavians. The Kalevala, Finland's
national epic, was compiled in the 19th century by the Finnish physician and
scholar Elias Lönnrot, who undertook the huge task of collecting folk poetry
from the remote wildernesses of Karelia. These old lyrics, ballads and
incantations, which even included a creation myth, had been part of the oral
tradition of speakers of the Balto-Finnic languages for at least two thousand
years. At the beginning of the 19th century, common folk could recite often 2000
verses out of it by heart. In order to comprehend the intertextual analogies and
similarities between the Jewish Genesis and pre-Christian sediments of the
Kalevala epic, you have to be able to read Finnish, unfortunately:

Few recent Israeli inventions:
An Israeli team at Tel Aviv University
"claim they have found a way to construct efficient photovoltaic cells
costing at least a hundred times less than conventional silicon based devices,
and with similar or better energy conversion efficiency. The reactive element
in the researchers' patent pending device is genetically engineered proteins
using photosynthesis for production of electrical energy."
If this claim proves true, it is a big step toward saving us all from massive
climate change and from the economic disaster of depending on ever more scarce
and expensive hydrocarbons. Certainly, it is likely that the Israelis will play
a big role in such alternative energy breakthroughs, since their own survival
depends on them.
Israeli Team Develops Robots to Save Lives:
' Leo Joskowicz, a scientist and professor at Hebrew University of
Jerusalem, has developed a special robot able to assist surgeons
with the positioning of needles and other medical tools during
procedures. . . Especially in the realm of neurosurgery, doctors
have come a long way in their ability to heal and repair certain
areas of the brain. However some openings that must be accessed are
too small for the naked eye to make an accurate entry point. If a
surgical tool is misplaced, the brain may start hemorrhaging or
permanent brain damage can occur.
Now that the robot is designed with its image-guided system,
surgeons are able to remain non-invasive while carrying out
successful surgeries. Patients' pain is now much more minimal and
chances for full recovery are likelier than ever. The robot was
developed over a two-year period through funding from the Israel
Ministry of Trade and Industry. Thanks to Joskowicz and his team,
people all over the world have a second chance at life.'
"Drop Foot gets a Lift, Thanks to Israeli invention:
'An Israeli-developed and manufactured wireless, computer-controlled
device that enables safe walking for people with a foot paralyzed
due to stroke, brain injury, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury or
multiple sclerosis has received approval from the US Food and Drug
Administration.
The heart of the system, developed by NESS of Ra'anana, is a sensor
in the shoe which identifies the walking stage of the paralyzed
foot. It then transmits a wireless signal to a microprocessor
attached underneath the knee. The NESS L300 system releases a
suitable and perfectly-timed electronic pulse to the nerves and
muscles that activate the paralyzed foot so as to facilitate the
user's next step. The electronic stimulus replaces the nerve signal
that would otherwise have arrived from the brain. '

START-UP NATION - The Story of Israel's
Economic Miracle
http://www.startupnationbook.com/
Israel has more companies on the tech-oriented
NASDAQ
stock exchange than any country outside the US
– more than all of Europe, India, and China
combined.
Nor is Israeli innovation limited to computers,
security, and communications; the Jewish state leads the world in medical device
patents, and is a strong global player in cleantech and biotech.
"When an Israeli man wants to date a woman, he asks
her out that night. When an Israeli entrepreneur has a business idea, he will
start it that week.”
According to the Organization for Economic
Co-operation and Development (OECD), 45 percent of Israelis are
university-educated,
which is among the highest percentages in the
world.
And according to a recent IMD World Competitiveness
Yearbook, Israel was ranked second among sixty developed nations on the
criterion of whether
“university education meets the needs of a
competitive economy.”
By the time Israeli students finish college,
they’re in their mid-twenties; some already have graduate degrees, and a large
number are married.
“All this changes the mental ability of the
individual”.
“They’re much more mature; they’ve got more life
experience. Innovation is all about finding ideas.”
Innovation often depends on having a different
perspective. Perspective comes from experience. Real experience also typically
comes with age or maturity.
But in Israel, you get experience, perspective, and
maturity at a younger age, because the society jams so many transformative
experiences into Israelis when they’re barely out of high school.
